Spearfishing Information

LOCATION:  Andaman Sea, Deep south of Thailand near the Malaysian border, Pick up and drop off at Trang town.

DIVING CONDITIONS:  The waters in this area are warm, ranging between 25-30 Celsius.  Offshore visibility is as much as 50m on a very good day, and inshore the visibility is between 15-30m.  Most spots can be speared at depths from surface to 10m, but many other areas range from surface to 30m+.  Spots range from shallow reefs of the outer islands with drop offs, selves, a wreck and bluewater pinnacles a few hours further out from the outer island.

DIFFICULTY LEVEL:  This destination is offered to freedivers only, no technical diving here. Hunters should be prepared to encounter almost anything, Thailands Andaman sea, although not as full of life as other places, houses some really big fish and it is a matter of luck as much as skill. 40kg plus cobia have been shot here as well as 100kg+ grouper, but finding them is half the battle. Blue water hunters and reefies are all welcome. To say that this destination is suitable for all skill levels is a fair but not all sites at this destination will be suited to the less experienced as the bigger fish 25kg+ tend to be below 20m and very smart. Long deep dives are the best way to get good sized fish here.

SPECIES ENCOUNTERED:  Some species encountered are Grouper, Red Bass, Red Snapper, Mauri Snapper, Jobfish, Coral trout, Jacks, Blue Fin Trevally, Golden Trevally, Cuda, Mahi Mahi, Rainbow runners, Sailfish, GT, Cobia are just a few of the target species. We also encounter Giant Grouper from time to time. November to March is Sailfish season.

(To see pictures of these fish, please use the English name for species here:  http://anglerweb.com/species/fishingspeciesindex.aspx )

BEST TIME TO VISIT:  From November to May
